LECTURER

Jeffrey R. “Dr. Jeff” Mueller is an associate professor and regional lead faculty for leadership and management at the Sacramento Campus of National University, the second largest private university in California. Prior to becoming a full-time professor he was a personnel officer and executive officer in the USAF, a corporate director of human resources and an organizational consultant who served over forty-five clients including CostCo and the State of California. He has over 30 years of combined managerial, training, consulting and teaching experience.

His degrees include a BA from the University of Wisconsin, a MPA from Golden Gate University and a DM (doctor of management) from University of Phoenix. He teaches online and onsite courses in leadership, teamwork, human resource management, training, organizational behavior and organizational development. He has published articles on leadership, organizational change, hiring, virtual teams and performance management. This is his seventh visit to Vietnam to teach for Royal Business School.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe and apply a four-step organization development process.
  2. Review and practice skills needed to be a successful change agent.
  3. Explain different approaches used by internal and external OD consultants.
  4. Demonstrate and apply seven maxims of effective organizational change.
  5. Design diagnostic models and surveys needed to analyze change efforts.
  6. Review and avoid top mistakes made by OD consultants.
  7. Introduce and institutionalize change efforts in real organizations.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

Instructor-led discussion/lecture, handouts, skill practice, introspective exercises and case analysis.

COURSE OUTLINE

Day One – Introduction to Organization Development and Change

  • Introductions
  • Define organization development vs. unplanned change
  • Differentiate pros and cons of internal and external consultants
  • Review skills and roles needed for OD consultants
  • Skill practice in authenticity
  • Overview of the OD process

Day Two – The OD Process Step One: Entry and Contract

  • Identify the client and build client commitment
  • Skill practice: write an effective change proposal (contract)
  • Review interpersonal issues in entering and contracting

 Day Three – Overcoming Resistance to Change and The OD Process Step Two: Diagnosis

  • List reasons people resist organizational change and what to do about it
  • Review and apply the seven maxims of effective organizational change
  • Skill practice in overcoming resistance to change
  • Define diagnosis and introduce diagnostic methods

Day Four – Diagnosis, continued and The OD Process Step Three: Intervention Design

  • Review models of levels of diagnosis: organization, group, individual
  • Review pros and cons of  data collection methods
  • Skill practice in survey design
  • Introduce and apply the data collection cycle
  • Introduce types of interventions by level of diagnosis

Day Five – The OD Process Step Four: Intervention Implementation and Evaluation

  • Review and apply the five key features of OD interventions
  • Choose appropriate interventions based on diagnostic data
  • Review intervention evaluation methods
  • Skill practice: intervention action planning to include evaluation
  • Course conclusion, application and celebration
